Salo 5610 — Dial-Up Modem

Salo 5610 · V.90 data modem · restored from unit no. DM-9805-0532 · Salo Oy, Salo, Finland, 1998

The restorer's note

The sound of getting online — the dial, the answer tone, and the scrambled training screech that meant the connection was about to hold. Salo built the analog front end; we restored the whole handshake, stage by stage, exactly as it negotiated in 1998.

Listening

Listening

Demonstration recordings, prepared at the bench.

  1. The connection

Trigger starts the full sequence — the dialling, the answer tone, the training screech, then the carrier settling in — a V.90 negotiation heard end to end.

  2. Three negotiations

The same handshake spoken three ways — Standard stepped through V.32, V.34, and V.90 at Speed 1.5 — each era of the line with its own accent.

    0:00 / 0:30

  3. Connected

The mix passes untouched for six seconds; then the line takes it — Scramble at 70 % imposing the modem's texture on the material while the Carrier level rises beneath it.
